A few weeks ago I became a volunteer for Healing Nations, a non-profit organization that aids needy youth and their families. This is a great organization that has a big heart for those it serves. The following was written by founder Shirley Salter and taken from the website:

The seed that birthed Healing Nations was planted in January of 1997 during the devastating floods in the Central Valley of California; particularly the west Modesto area. While assisting flood victims during this time God impressed upon my heart His desire to express His love through me and others in a new place and in a new way. The victims of the flooding in west Modesto were to be the first children, youth and families that we would learn to love and serve and be blessed to become a part of their lives. We are still in contact with the children of these families that are now young adults.

Healing Nations has Girls and Boys Clubs, Science and Music programs and an outreach on Wednesday evenings during which 40-50 children are fed a nutritious meal. Also in December is a Children’s Christmas party on December 12 and one for older youth on December 14. The need to help is great.

Today, I ask that all who read this make a donation to help this cause. There is a Christmas show set for December 7, 2012 and a raffle will be held to award donated gifts which will include gift baskets, food coupons and gift cards. The hope is to get 50 to 100 prizes with a value of $25.00 each. Would you please consider giving something to help out? Any size contribution would help and will be greatly appreciated. The Driver

After church this morning I was approached in the foyer by a young man I calculated to be in his mid-thirties. He said he was a visitor and his name was Mike. I learned he is the son-in-law of one of the churches elders and I reckon I was pointed out by someone so he came over to talk to me. Mike said,” I really like reading your blog.” He said it makes him laugh and cry and that some of it is entertaining. Mike mentioned a couple of the entries, one of which included the one about Rick Criscione and I going to Mario’s. He went on to say he hopes I’ll continue to write it. After I retired last year I quickly found myself sitting around with nothing to do. I was bored and unmotivated to find stuff to occupy my time. I watched a lot of TV and surfed the web. Well, I thought that was bad, but this past couple of days have been even worse. I am lethargic and practically non-ambulatory. I realize this is not healthy but I don’t really care.
